Shopfronts

Starter Floor

A grounded starting point for first-time shopfront vinyl and signs in South Africa, written for teams who already work on site.

How Starter Floor gets a first shopfront pack onto the floor

Starter Floor is for teams planning a first round of shopfront vinyl or signs. It covers the basics needed to move from concept to a workable production brief, including materials, sizes, and fitment thinking. Use it when the site needs branded graphics but the job still has to be pinned down properly.

Start with the fascia width, glazing count, and the trading hours allowed for fitment. In Durban and Cape Town, salt air can shorten the life of the wrong film on exposed shopfronts. Johannesburg dust and older painted substrates usually need extra prep before any vinyl is cut or applied.

Take one straight-on site photo before artwork is signed off. That image helps check mullions, door swings, alarm boxes, and any uneven paint line that could throw off panel joins. Keep it with the job card so the workshop and fitment team are looking at the same frontage.

Starter pack handover points

The pack is meant to turn a rough idea into a usable shopfront spec. It should identify the vinyl type, panel sizes, placement zones, and any areas where signs are better than glazing graphics. One workable arrangement for the fascia and windows usually beats a stack of options that ignore the site.

Use this pack before adding extra items from Shopfronts or expanding into separate brand mark work. Confirm artwork scale, laminate choice, and the packing list before dispatch leaves the workshop. Vinyl and shopfront jobs are measured from the board size and a straight-on shot of the shopfront.

Site conditions that alter the spec

Branch work around OR Tambo freight, retail-centre access rules, and walls that have been repainted more than once. Measurements taken from a plan often miss bulkheads, conduits, and uneven reveals above the fascia. If an older graphics pack is still on site, note what must stay and what must be stripped before new material is produced.

Salt air in Durban and Cape Town can push material selection towards tougher outdoor grades and better edge protection. Inland dust around Gauteng changes surface prep and can affect adhesion if the glass or wall is not cleaned properly before fitment. Loadshedding also matters because print slots, lamination, and installation windows need proper planning around power availability.

First-pack briefing points

Send branch name, site photos, measured widths, and any landlord rules that affect signage. Include opening dates only if they change access for installation or delivery. A clear note on glass coverage, fascia lettering, and internal visibility avoids the wrong material being booked.

Save the brief with the job card, artwork proof, and material list once dimensions are checked. That record helps when a buyer asks what vinyl was specified, how many panels were packed, or whether the fascia needed direct application or mounted signage. It also gives the next branch a usable reference instead of a guess from an old photo.
